The ECOWAN Project involved the design, supply and installation of plant and equipment for a fibre, SDH, DWDM, Wireless and WiMAX infrastructure from Freetown through to the borders of Guinea and Liberia. The fibre cable route of 600km drastically improves the telecoms infrastructure in Sierra Leone enabling the country to link with its neighbours as part of the ECOWAS Regional Backbone with a new Landing Station in Lumley and further to Europe via a new ACE submarine cable. The WiMAX element of the project provided Internet access to government organisations in Freetown.

KN identified the landmark ECOWAN project in 2011 as a target project for the business and one which fitted our portfolio seamlessly. With KN establishing itself in the region in recent years, much background knowledge and experience was been gained with a solid understanding of the nature and characteristics of working in Sierra Leone. Knowledge of logistics, local labour, seasonal changes and local practices all positioned KN well in meeting the needs of such a challenging project.
