Grafton Street is a pedestrian street, catering for exceptionally large volumes of pedestrian traffic with vehicular access allowed between the hours of 6am and 11am, 7 days per week. Traffic Management was a major part of the works, with the safety of pedestrians and other road users remaining paramount throughout the construction period. Footfall substantially increased during the Christmas shopping season therefore a site demobilisation period from mid November to mid-January was required.
The scheme involved the repaving of Grafton Street with natural stone materials. The concrete road base material was retained and new stone pavers and flags laid on a new high strength bedding mortar, replacing the existing red clay pavers. The works also involved the provision and installation of new traffic and public lighting ducts, street furniture in the form of bollards and bins and the replacement of all utility covers and frames within the site extents.
